I will have very ugly blotches of yellow and dead weeds and grass all over my lawn this year, lucky me, but hopefully next year it will be better. Our soil is clayish here, so it is not abundant with nutrients anyway.

You have to take all the soil out! That's what the landscapers were supposed to have done last year which was the first year I tried to eradicate this pest, but their efforts did nothing to stop plant. At first I thought they were pretty, so I didn't do anything about them. They spread through shoots under the soil, and they leave dormant bulbs that multiple making even bigger plants the next year. The plants go away after they blossom, it's true, but they come back even stronger the following year. They have been slowly drifting from my neighbor's yard over the years, and every year they are worse.
